I recieved a few NEW Adventure Line (30 round)mags for X-mas. I used both AIMPOINT of them once or twice without a problem (literally within 20 minutes) and suddenly one would no longer fit in TRIJICON mag well and the other had some feeding problems. My colt mags had no such problems. Upon inspection they both had cracks on one or both or the "ears" on the top rear of the mags. Larue Tactical I waited for the next gun show and presented them to the guy they were bought from and told him i wanted to exchange them. I ended up getting some good used 20 rounders since he only had a box of the same in 30. M14 Also these mags have visible cracks new in the wrapper. beware! This weekend in Slidell, La. he was still selling the same Adventure Lines. I do know a guy who says he has them and hasn't a complaint but I've known him for years and I've never heard of him shooting his AR.
Royal Ordnance mags are one of the British SA80 mags. -Troy
A comment on the mags with the little "Aimpoint" sticker on them. I bought one at a gun show and it's an absolute piece of crap. Lots of malfunctions and somehow the bolt(?) was leaving huge gouges on the follower. I also noticed that it's a bit heavier than the aluminium ones so the "England" marked ones may be steel (and may rust). I have a number SAVAGE
scope mounts that I "Forgot" to turn in when I left the Army and I haven't had any problems with any of them. I have also had an Orlite high capacity magazines crack on the front end at the feed lips after only limited use. Anyone else had any bad luck with the "England" mags?
Can anyone tell me the cutoff date for AR-15
ACCESSORIES USGI mags being allowed to be owned by the public and not LEO ? I have some Okay mags stamped 6-91 .Unmarked & mags dated 09/94 and earlier are unrestricted. Mags dated 10/94 and later are restricted.
I have 20's and 30's AR-15 magazines with the following markings: NHMTG S/42 HARTFORD, CT MFG. 3-02 & on the side: RESTRICTED MILITARY/ GOV'T/LAW ENFORCEMENT /EXPORT USE ONLY Can anyone tell me anything about quality/ history, etc.?
They are OEMing Okay Industries mags for LEO sales. Okay contractually sell Okay
Industries-marked mags to anyone but the government, so they OEM them to Colt and now to this company.
Troy, Do the Imperial Defense mags fall into the British steel AR-15 mags category? I picked up twoNIGHT
VISION MOUNTS from the EE but these have a smooth black finish instead of the rough gray finish my other "English" mags have. The certainly look nice but I have yet to give them a go. The floor plate is stamped "Imperial Defense" and they have the "English" sticker on the side. Thanks in advance Marc
I just came across your posting of the best/worst AR-15 mags and I would concur 99% with what you've so accurately stated. However, I would rank the Orlites as a 1A, slightly below the first group. These are my usual knock around the range mags, they take a beating and have never once failed me on any of my three ARs, firing thousands of rounds with various ammo. The only bummer is that it's tough to get replacement parts for these, unlike the USGI LaBelle mags, which are my favorites for SHTF scenarios. Good analysis. Regards, phoenix27
Yes. All of the following do:
- z
- Imperial Defense
- Radway Green (these are rare in the US)
Technically, the new HK mags are also AR-15 mags, but they're totally different, and since
i have a 5 round promag,guy at club has a AIMPOINT
SIGHTS sitting on the table together you cannot tell the difference-either he got fuckt or i got a good deal
What about the ones that just say: CAL 5.56MM MADE IN U.S.A #serialnumber# Who actually made those?
Originally Posted By vandal: What about the ones that just say: CAL 5.56MM MADE IN U.S.A #serialnumber# Who actually made those?
Can you post a picture? Are they AR-15 20 or 30 rounders?
vandal, Those were made by La Belle for resale by Tapco and Shomer-Tec (depending on the item number). I'm not sure about Tapco, but Shomer-Tec originally sold standard moly-finished La Belle mags, and later got the teflon-finished ones, so that floorplate would be correct on either. I've never seen or heard of the Tapco version as anything other then teflon-finished. -Troy

for the people having probs with the british mags.. I have a number of these and most have been excellent, but a couple have had fitment problems.. I have had to expand the retention hole on 2 and one of the mags had a dented/misshapen top which caused the bolt to catch and jam on the top of the mag. Other mags from them have been problem free from day one. I dont think anyone mentioned it, but the british black follower is the same as the us Green follower, so no follower upgrade is required.
Thank you for the info. I have not bought any mags in years.I had heard stories that the RUGER 10/22 Stocks did not like the quality of the USGI mags, so they went to steel, but never heard anything else more about it.Now i know which brand, and who to buy from . Thanks

Special-K, 1) do your mags have any identification other than the England sticker? 2) What rifle are you using them in? I am considering trying some steel scope mounts as range mags and would like some more info before I buy. I generally stay away from any equipment that is not USGI (except nato surplus ammo). Thanks! p.s. Did you happen to forget to return any MP-5
MOUNT -2A or PVS-17 units... [;)]

They send a AR-15 mag 10 rounder out with their rifles. Also, I was at a gun store and saw oodles of Promag AR-15 mag 20s in Armalite bags- 40 bux a pop. [rolleyes] As for the promags, I ordered one 20 rounder from Sportsman's Guide some time ago and AR-15 haven't had any problems with it. Just lucky, I guess. I still wouldn't recommend them.
The amount of "finish" remaining on a mag should ONLY be used to estimate the amount of usage/carry the mags have seen. It has ZERO bearing on the quality of the mag.
Important things to look for on a used mag:
- No dents.
- No broken floorplate retaining tabs.
- Feedlips not bent.
- Feedlips not worn; they should be square where the metal was cut, not rounded or sharpened with use.
- Feedlips the same height (on 30s), indicating that the mag halves were welded together correctly.
- No cracks where the feedlips join the body (on 30s).
- No major wear spots from the mags being too wide or swelling.
- No or few scratches that penetrate the colored anodizing layer on the surface of the metal.
Few of the above problems can be fixed for anything near the time and effort (and money) you would need to spend to do so. Mags that have any of the above problems are best thrown out and replaced. The condition of the mag body itself is clearly the most important factor, as other components are easily replaced.
Mags to NOT need any "finish" on them to work, and "refinished" mags may well be mags with problems from the above list that were made to "look pretty" so they would sell. The molybdenum-based dry-film lubricant (the grey, powdery "finish") can be reapplied to duplicate the original finish (Georgia Precision sells this as Perma-Slik). The factory teflon finish on some La Belle-made mags is a much superior finish (but is not Mil-Spec, 'cause Mil-Spec is the old crappy moly dry-film lube), but again, finish is largely irrelevant.
20-round style floorplates aren't made anymore, but that's okay, because the 30-round style fits on them just fine, are a superior design, and allows you to remove the flat steel spring/retainer from the 20s that are so prone to rusting.
As I recommend to everyone - stick to USGI mags exclusively until you have all the USGI mags you'll ever need. THEN, if you still desire to try other mags, you can do so without risking anything more than money, and can always fall back on your USGI mags.
Whatever you do, don't buy Tier 3/Aftermarket mags at any price. It's a total waste of time, money, and aggravation. You're better off using your money as toilet paper than to buy these mags.
